On April 23, 2012, Paradux Media Group’s Tisha Oehmen and Mike Frey led a breakout session at the Oregon Nonprofit Leaders Conference, held in Medford, Oregon. The conference brought together nonprofit leaders from across the state to share ideas, resources, and practical strategies for strengthening their organizations and expanding community impact.
The Paradux Media Group session focused on “Why Social Media for Nonprofits” and “Understanding Social Media Platforms.” The presentation addressed both the strategic purpose behind nonprofit social media efforts and the practical realities of managing multiple platforms with limited time and staff.
Condensing the “why” and the “how” of social media into a single hour is no small task. The session acknowledged this challenge and focused less on tactics and trends and more on foundational questions: why nonprofits choose to participate in social media, how those platforms support mission-driven work, and what level of internal resources are required to manage them effectively.
Rather than promoting a one-size-fits-all approach, the discussion emphasized the importance of alignment. Attendees explored how various organizations utilize social media in distinct ways, depending on their audience, goals, and capabilities. Topics included how nonprofits structure responsibility for social media internally, whether through staff, volunteers, or outside support, and how those choices affect consistency and effectiveness.
The session also encouraged participants to think critically about platform selection, messaging, and sustainability. Social media was framed as a long-term communication tool rather than a short-term promotional fix.
Paradux Media Group values opportunities to teach in classroom-style settings and engage directly with business and nonprofit leaders. Feedback following the session, along with requests for additional information, suggested that attendees found the presentation both relevant and valuable.
Paradux Media Group appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Oregon Nonprofit Leaders Conference and to contribute practical insight to organizations working to serve their communities more effectively.
