Your Facebook Business Page transforms to a ‘Timeline’ page in 3 weeks whether you’ve made the changes or not. Since the announced change, a lot of small businesses have changed their cover photo and made the plunge and have been slowly adjusting and updating their page. But if you haven’t taken a look at the new Facebook Milestone feature, you’re missing out.
If you’re a small business owner and haven’t made the change, don’t worry there are lots of BIG corporate pages out there that haven’t made the plunge, including Pepsi, Papa John’s, etc. Obviously, it’s something that their team is working on, Facebook milestone feature included, but didn’t feel the need to have to make the move immediately, so don’t feel as though you’re behind or out of the game.
Today’s blog is going to focus on the ‘Milestone’ feature of the New Facebook Business Page. The milestone feature is the more detailed facet of the new timeline, and can be a little more time consuming to do it right. The big boxes have shown their going to utilize the milestone feature and I see this as a great opportunity and advantage for local businesses.
Here are a few ways a small local business can utilize the Milestone Feature:
- When your business or organization was established
- When or if new locations were opened
- Employee hires and staff growth
- When new products were released or began to carry
- When you reached a certain number of orders/customers/revenue, etc.
- When you established important vendor relationships
- When you received any local awards or recognition
- Local Chamber and Non-Profit
- Local sponsorships/ High School etc.
- Logo changes. TV, radio, print ads
- Draw a correlation between changes in your community and your business.
- When you launched your website or social media presence
I like what the ‘Milestones’ have to offer a small local business. Just use a little imagination. It has the ability to tell a local story that your old Facebook page wasn’t able to offer. It has the opportunity to act more like a website, build more engagement and create a more likable brand.
Downside To Facebook Milestone Feature:
In a blog written by Jay Baer, Jay outlines 14 Ways New Facebook Betrays Small Business, and when talking about the milestone feature says, “For small businesses that may not have the photos to post, the time to post, or the inclination to figure out a backwards-looking historical record, it’s probably a bridge too far.” And for people not wanting to invest a few evenings or pay someone to implement your outline of the milestone feature I completely agree with him.
It’s a matter of allowing the big boxes to create a bigger advantage using the milestone feature on Facebook, or you investing a little time and turn the tables on them. Create the local ties and take advantage of the buy local sentiments that are going through communities today with the milestone feature.
Easy steps to create a Facebook Milestone Feature
Just go to your composer (where you make a post) and click on Milestone Feature
Once you’re taken to the facebook milestone feature enter a title, a location (optional) the year (month and day optional) story line and picture. Uploading a picture and title are mandatory for a milestone, but once again think outside the ‘book.’ Maybe save an article from the newspaper as a jpeg. There are so many wonderful things you can do if you just take a few minutes to think.
So get busy, think outside the book… And as always if you have any questions please let us know, we’re here to help.

Basically, the top row of apps (because most people probably won’t expand the app panel) is like your navigation bar. And one of the most important things in any navigation bar is your homepage. So you can add your website to your Facebook page (with the MyWebees app , and have a prominent icon on your navigation bar which people can use to see your entire website – IN your fanpage!
Thanks for the tip! We’ll check it out!
